Following are the broad areas of activities that were completed.

Revisions to MSc in Community Medicine curriculum

MSc Community Medicine curriculum was reviewed and revisions were incorporated. This revised curriculum is being implemented for the batch of 2009.

A platform for exchange of information on existing training programmes in public health by the partner  institutions

Following programmes were presented at LANKAPHEIN meetings.

The certificate course on Field epidemiology, conducted by the Epidemiology Unit.

Diploma in Community Health conducted by Dept. of Public Health in University of Kelaniya

Collation of information on public health training programmes conducted by various organizations in the country                                                                                                   

Information on public health training programmes conducted by various organizations in the country  other than undergraduate community medicine training programmes in the medical faculties, was collated and a report was formulated and presented.

Basic course on teaching/ learning methods and assessment techniques   

·   A ten day training programmes for the academic/tutor staff of public health training institutes was conducted from 19th to 30th October 2009.

·   A five day training programmes for the academic/tutor staff of public health training institutes was conducted from 20th to 25th June 2011.

The resource persons are medical education specialists and academic staff trained on medical education affiliated to Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo.

LANKAPHEIN jointly with  CCPSL organized a theme seminar on ‘Health policy’ on the 2nd April 2011. As presented below, the programme comprised a series of presentations and a panel discussion.

   EVENTS


 

Two representatives of LANKAPHEIN participated in the  SEAPHEIN organized ‘Training on Health Care Financing and payment systems: ensuring Efficient Universal coverage’ at the Grand Shanti Hotel, Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia- September 26-29th 2011

 

 

This training programme was organized by the South East Asian Public Health Education Institutes Network.  There were 30 participants from the South East Asian region namely from Bangladesh, Myanmar Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Malaysia. The resource personnel were from the Faculty of Public Health Universitas Indonesia and from United Nations University-International Institute of Global Health (UNU_IIGH) in Malaysia.

 

The training was conducted over four days.  Initially an overview to health care financing was given with different options in health care financing.  Introduction to taxed based financing, social insurance, commercial insurance and out of pocket financing was discussed. Payment systems, both prospective and retrospective were explored with an in-depth review of capitation and case mix payment systems. Introduction to diagnostic related groups with the use of a grouper and the manner in which it is utilized in Indonesia was discussed.  Hand on experience on calculating various indices for assessing efficiency, utilization and coverage were given with additional reading material. 

 

This was also an opportunity for networking and in sharing experiences with different countries. This training and networking would open gates for further research and training on health care financing and payment systems which is a priority area in the field of public health in Sri Lanka.
